Category: Zone BBS Suggestions and Feedback
Two things I just added. First, you can now set a webpage title in your profile. If you do this along with the URL, the title will show instead of the URL in your profile. The other place that this affects is the new user websites page. There's now a link off the user profiles page that will take you to a complete list of user websites. Any website that is listed in a profile under the webpage field will be there. It'll show the URL unless a title has been entered, see above. Enjoy.
Oh J, this is tight! Lol! Thanks for this! Very cool, I"m gonna change mine now hehe.

Okay, I did mine, and I also looked at the page. A lot of peopel have none, NA, donthaveawebpage.com, www.zonebbs.com, etc, on theres. Is there anyway these can be taken out, I know it would take some time, but yeah? Lol.
Caitlin
I mean, I realize it's the user's problem, but I assume some of them don't log in anymore or something.

A few things to suggest. putting a space between users after the website url/title. Second having it alphabetical like a list for As, another for users who start with B. And finally some have their online journals or blogs linked as their website. Maybe make a section just for them to seperate those who have websites/webpages and those who have blogs/online journals.
I think nonsensical web urls like www.donthaveawebpage.com, unless that's a real website, *doubtful* should be excluded from this, as should the zone bbs website url unless the profile is of a person who helped create that site, for it is not the website owned by other ppl is it?
Dobbin, well, how do you know if a nonsensical url is not real? Programatically you can only check if the pattern www.something.something else is there .. e.g. signs like * or are not valid url so you can actually check for those but, and I appologize for the bad language, but www.whatthefuck.com is, or was, actually a pretty funny web site, it looks nonsensical but it's a real web site so it's hard to judge the web site based on the url unless you go there yourself and that would just be too much maintenance. And I think people can use the Zone as their web site, I mean that's where they hang out, it isn't necessarily a web site you designed but the site that says the most about you, and if you have your profile on the Zone and hang out there all the time it would be the most appropriate site to put in there.
I have one suggestion. I really hate seeing user profiles that are almost empty, with no info. I think sometimes it's not obvious to new user's that they can fill out a profile. I think the first time they log in or sign up this should be made apparent, a welcome page for a new user should say (we strongly encourage you to fill out a profile so that other members can learn about you, click here to complete your profile". It's been a while since I signed up but I think it's not like that and I actually had to go to my profile and figure out there was still info that needed to be filled out.
Cheers

Well, a nonsensical URL could be real, but it's probably not the poster's! Lol!
Oh that is so sweet. Checking it out now!
It doesn't have to be the poster's URL. Just the website they choose to put there. I'll put in some checks to make sure they actually put an URL in the box instead of just none.
Hi J, Oh okay, yeah, I guess I realized it doesn't have to be their URL. I just thought of something, could you possibly do this exact same thing, only for the Messenger Addresses field? I'm trying to find contacts from the zone that I can talk to off the zone as well, and I'd really really love to see this. Thanks!
Caitlin
Ya, thought of this one as well. But should the messenger field be separated or kept as it is?
It may be confusing the way it is now, wonder if you separate the different messengers?
I agree with jrimer. Separating out the separate messengers might be best...As mine currently sets I only have one messenger address, and I write it MSN: ThenAddress so know one has any doubts...LOL. If it was separated out it would be easier...
Most definitly there should be a few Messenger fields in profiles. The main ones are: Aim, Msn, Icq, Yim (Yahoo). And maybe code it to the point where it'll only show the messengers you list. Instead of only using Msn and keeping the other 3 blank. You'd only see in the profiles Msn: YourId@hotmail.com. And maybe have them linked. I've seen this done on LJ, Proboards and few other sites. You'd have to google it and do your research for source code that automatically adds people to contact lists/IM People for all Messenger devices.
Ya we can do that, probably. At first I did one field so I wouldn't have to keep adding new ones, but I think we're pretty well set with messengers now and if we had the major 4, we'd be fine.
Yeah! I agree that fields would be best, although, suppose people haven't been to the site for a long time, but there messenger thing is still up, just not filled out in the appropriate boxes? Will they still show up, just not under the separate fields? Just something I was wondering about. Lol. Anyway I'm dying to see this!
Caitlin
Ya, we'd keep the old field there to show up, but only if someone didn't fill in the new one, I think.
Awesome, sounds good to me! I can't wait to see this in action!
Caitlin
I'd like to see if we go ahead with this, that the messenger addresses be moved to the appropriate fields and not in one. It'd probably be more work, but I wonder if it could be workable?
I agree. Lol.
Caitlin
But I think taht even though the three separate fields should be implemented, the fields with random messengers in it should be kept and shown on the messenger page because some people won't just update teir profiles. Hope this makes sense.
Caitlin
OK, all this sounds confusing
